It Must Match!

I love comics.

And when I saw this one, I giggled and had to cut it out.

When Ken saw me giggling and cutting out a comic strip, he asked if I was cutting out Baby Blues because he almost sent it to me.

Because I wear pony tails a lot and the rubber and or bow must match my outfit perfectly. Or it drives me nuts.

Perfect!

The Considerate Thing to Do

I have said it a million times.  I love comic strips.  I'm pretty sure that the illustrators are spying on me because some of them hit so close to home it's ridiculous.

So I give you today...don't call me...before you text and find out if it's okay to do so...

Starring Jeremy as June.  Oh yeah girl.  You know it it's true!

I would NEVER call June without texting her first.  And if she *calls* me...I immediately answer because I *know* it's an emergency!  No doubt about that.  Cause she always texts me first and asks if it's okay to call.

Cause that's the considerate thing to do and she's considerate like that.  ;)

June, this blog is dedicated to you!

For "Non-Working" SAHM Mothers Everywhere

This strip is for all you "non-working" SAHM.  Enjoy!

I always said that comics imitate real life.  On the For Better or Worse site, the illustrator discusses what the strip is about.

Lynn's Notes:

When the kids were small, the work involved often filled a day. By suppertime when laundry, cleaning, shopping and meals were done, I wondered where the time had gone. It wasn't until the dishes were done and the kids in bed that I could sit down - without guilt - and enjoy the paper.

It's amazing how "invisible" a housekeeper's job is! For those who share the home and enjoy the fruits of "Mom's labor" things like clean clothes folded neatly in drawers, a tidy, sanitary refrigerator, vacuumed rugs, washed floors, swept and organized closets, prepared meals, answered mail, full toilet roll holders and all the other myriad details that go into running a home seem to occur like magic. If you don't see or take part in the process, you just accept it and expect it all to be done for you. In fact, unless something is NOT done, you don't notice it at all!

This revelation came to me when I hired a housekeeper. My sweet lady would come one day every week. I'd leave things for Janet to do. After awhile, dusting and ironing and clean floors just "happened". Recycling was done, mats were shaken and shelves were wiped clean...and if I wasn't there to have a coffee with her and see her work for myself - I took my clean house for granted!

Being a "housewife" is a full time job. Add parenting to this and you have an all- encompassing career - for which many of us apologize! I was lucky enough to have a job that allowed me to work at home. I had two jobs! Strips like this one were done to support all the smart, productive and caring moms I knew who were struggling to stay sane. These comic strip complaints also made me less resentful of my own responsibilities. It felt amazingly good to confide my feelings to an unseen community of friends...millions of them!!!

Comic Strip of the Day

I love comic strips!

In particular, I love For Better or Worse.  And the Sunday strip this week was just so...perfect.  I'm pretty sure that the creator of the strip has been spying on our house.

Not that *I* would ever do anything like Elly did!  (And yes.  Elly and I are on a first name basis.)

And by "never do that" I mean that I would never get caught!  She's an amateur.  ;)

Oh come on.  You know that you can relate to this strip...whether you're hiding from your kids or your spouse...or your dog.  No one wants to share their favorite treat.  Or to wait until after dinner to eat that treat. Even though they are so mean and made their kids wait.

So, where exactly is your favorite hiding spot?

I'm not telling you mine.  Because Shane reads the blog and then he would know where to find me.

*If* I hid from them eating treats that is.  :p

Well Hello Wayne!

Well.  Hello Wayne.  Great to see you!

Grab a plunger.  There's work to be done!

Well.  Hello Mary Mayken.

Grab a toy/stuffed animal/blocks or whatever you can.  No need to play with it.

Just go ahead and stuff it down the john.

Wayne will be here soon to fix it.

Well.  Hello Ginny.  Hello Kim.

Nice job interrogating her.  Still don't know what it was.

I just know Wayne needs to plunge.  And plunge some more.  And then he needs to continue plunging.  And then when he thinks he's finished, plunge it some more.  :-|

:p

We never did figure out what she threw in there.  :-|

A Fate With Pinking Sheers

The apple doesn't fall far from the tree.

For many reasons but one is my love for comic strips.  I  them.  I have said more than once on my blog that a good comic strip can make you feel like you're looking in the mirror.  The ones that I can identify with, I cut out and save.

And my mom does too.  I somehow got and kept a strip that she cut out in 1991.

Because once upon a time, the illustrator for the strip Nancy must have been sitting in my house when I was growing up.  Watching the whole ugly event unfold and thinking the entire time that they wanted...no needed...to get back to their drawling board and do the Sunday strip.

The whole ugly incident is so clear to me.  I remember it like it was yesterday.  I was sitting at my parents kitchen at dinner one night.  We were all in our usual seats.  Dad was on the far side of the oval across from me.  Susan was beside me and mom was across from her.

Well.  Hold up.  Let me back up for about an hour prior to that.

My sister was mad at my mom because mom wouldn't take her to get her hair cut.  She was so mad and in a fit of anger, she said "screw her.  I'm going to cut my own hair."

So she did.

With pinking sheers.

In case you don't know what those are, here's a visual image to help you out.

That's right.  Jagged edges and all.  And mom's scissors looked EXACTLY like this pair.

So Susan commenced to cutting her bangs.  But she cut them too short.  They were probably a 1/2 long. And they were all jagged.

Because she used pinking sheers to cut her hair.

So after she cut...ie maimed...her hair, she was obviously upset and in tears.

AND THEN MOM CAME HOME.

/cue dark music

And that's when the real fun began.  We all sat down to eat dinner.  Mom was yelling.  Susan was crying.  The harder she cried, the harder I laughed.

And dad sat there with a stupid "what the hell happened here" look on his face.

And I couldn't stop laughing.  And she couldn't stop crying.  And my mom couldn't stop yelling.  And dad couldn't stop the look on his face.

And then my mom turned on me.  Because I was laughing so hard that I fell out of my chair.  So she nicely suggested to me that I either collect myself or go to my room.

So I went to my room.  Because that was some funny shit and I couldn't stop laughing.  (I'm still laughing thinking about it.)

And it took months for Susan's hair to grow out.

And years for my mom to get over it.  I guess that she was over it by the time that this strip came out 6 years after "the incident" because she cut it out.

And I saved it.

Because it's FUNNY.

Oh.  Did I mention my sister was 13 years old at the time?

Or that her best friend did the same exact thing a few weeks later to her hair?  With the same type of pinking sheers if I remember correctly.

Dumb teenagers.  I guess she showed my mom.  LOL.

Comics Imitating Real Life...Again

I love, love, love comic strips!

Somehow the illustrators figure out a way to communicate a real life situation that occurs in the majority of households on a daily basis in a funny way.

And I love the comic strip Baby Blues. It's just awesome! It's the one strip that our whole family loves. Shane use to be addicted to reading them and would buy the books and read them from cover to cover.

Giggling the whole way and yelling for me to come and read one of them.

So, what do you think about this particular strip? (Click on it to enlarge.)

Ken and I both giggled. Well, I giggled and then sighed. He giggled and said how cute he was. :p

Let It Snow! Let It Snow! Let It Snow!

Even though the South is ruled by the Heat Miser, we've been hit pretty hard by snow this year. We still have piles of snow from the two feet of snow that we received a month ago.

Apparently, the Heat Miser and his brother, the Snow Miser, have come to some kind of agreement that has allowed it to snow in Virginia. Because it's snowing. Again.

Readers of my blog know that I am a big fan of comic strips. I love it when one really nails what really happens in people's everyday lives. The last couple of days, Zits has been running strips that have to do with snow and how the different family members view being snowed in.

Man....I think that the illustrator has been spying on my house!

So, what will you be doing with your snowed-in time? Sleeping? Watching movies? Playing in the snow? Playing board or video games? Me? I'll be cleaning out kids book shelves, which have books piled so high that I'm surprised none have fallen over and hurt someone.

But certainly not the spice drawer. Come on. I'm not like that mom at all!

And just to brighten up your snow day, enjoy a little music by the Heat Miser and his bro, the Snow Miser!

Hope you get all of your projects done! :)

Comic Strip Time

I love it when a comic strip makes me laugh out loud. This is one of them. The humor is just so dry and funny. I'm sure that a few of you will laugh at it too. And identify with it no doubt!

Accomplishing Things...Or Not

If you read my blog, you know that I love comic strips. I love to read a strip and say "yes! I get it!" One strip that I can really relate to is For Better Or Worse, especially since the illustrator has reverted the family back to when the children were young.

I especially relate to the mom, Elly, and this particular strip has it all. Note:

1. She's a list maker and gets a great satisfaction from checking things off of the list. :)

2. She also mentally goes through her list and checks things off of it and smiles as she thinks about the things that she's crossed off of her list. Yeah. Me too. :)

3. But (and there's ALWAYS a but) no matter how many things she checks off the list, 15 other things either jump onto it or she has simply traded one thing on the list for another. :(

Accomplishments are so fleeting but she enjoys them even if it's for one brief moment. After all, you have to take them when you can get them. :)

4. Well, I'll let the state of her house speak for itself. :)

So, are YOU Elly? I'm betting that if you're a mom (no matter what stage you're at), you will read this strip and see yourself. If you don't, particularly with the messy house, can we change families for a few days? ;)

Comics Imitate Real Life :)

If you're a regular reader of my blog, you know already that I love comic strips. Zits, Baby Blues and For Better or Worse seem to be my favorite right now. I think that it's because I can identify with them.

The Sunday funnies this week was no exception. Every mom can relate to the mom in For Better or Worse in this strip.

Then my mom sent me an email from her crackberry and said that the dad in Zits strip on Sunday was sooooo my dad. I'll have to agree with her on that one.

Click on the strips to fully enjoy!

Happy Monday! :)

Comics Are For Everyone!

It's so funny how comics can capture a snapshot of your life in three or four little frames.

We know that I love comics.

We know that Shane loves comics.

Now you know that Ken loves them too.

He came home and asked me if I saw the Blondie strip today. When I said no, he said that I really needed to read it.

Sighing heavily, he said that he and Dagwood were like one person and he totally gets him. {Click to enlarge the strip.}

And now, through the power of the comics, you have a glimpse into our daily dinner conversations courtesy of Blondie.

Except, I'm much sneakier than Blondie. I would never tell Ken I used tofu instead of meat.

Blondie's a novice. ;)

PS - No, Ken. Before you ask, I've never substituted tofu for anything. ;)
